Following the client's lead
Since the drive to grow is already there, the therapist's job is to keep up, not to lead. What to talk about, where to start and how deep to go are the client's call. The therapist doesn't advise or interpret, and keeps process-guiding to a minimum: not for lack of views, but out of trust in the client's own sense of direction. Non-directive does not mean no direction: as one author puts it, "there is indeed direction, but that the direction is prompted and determined by the client." This is also the main difference between PCT and emotion-focused therapy (EFT): EFT grew out of PCT and adds process-guiding tasks within the empathic relationship, such as chair work (inviting the client to speak to an imagined person in an empty chair).[2,8,12]
