Clinical Psychology
Provided by clinical psychologists
Your pain doesn't have to be borne by endurance alone — it deserves professional understanding and a real response.
Clinical psychology is a structured, assessment-based professional intervention, working to the Scientist-Practitioner Model.
When psychological difficulties are clearly disrupting how you function, you may need a more systematic way to work through them.
Clinical psychology is a structured, assessment-based professional intervention. The clinical psychologists practising at TreeholeHK work to the Scientist-Practitioner Model — walking alongside you, targeting the right issues, and helping you rebuild the life you want.
Through scientific assessment and treatment, we help you — when you're carrying intense emotions or symptoms — find steadiness again and rebuild the rhythm of daily life.

You may be going through
Symptoms consistent with a clinical diagnosis
Such as depression, OCD, PTSD, panic disorder, phobias or psychosis.
Persistent emotional distress
Ongoing low mood, anxiety, panic, insomnia or compulsions — life ruled by intense anxiety or fear, or a thought you can't shake.
Daily functioning is affected
You can't focus at work, relationships are suffering, and even getting up to do small things feels beyond you.
A wish to understand it systematically
To work through what's troubling you step by step, and treat it at the root.
Feeling discouraged and helpless
Worn down by serious distress, with relief from symptoms as the first priority.
You don't need to decide first whether you're 'serious enough' — in the first session, your clinical psychologist assesses it together with you.
Psychotherapy, coaching or clinical psychology — what's the difference?
The three services take different approaches and suit different moments. Here's how they compare, to help you choose.
| Coaching (ForestGuide) | Psychotherapy | Clinical Psychology | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | No significant emotional distress; you have a concrete goal and want support moving in a clear direction. | You're mostly managing life but feel stuck, lost or empty, and want to be understood — not assessed or labelled. | Emotions or symptoms are clearly affecting daily life, or you're experiencing symptoms consistent with a clinical diagnosis. |
| Approach | Goal- and action-oriented psychological support — moving toward who you want to become. | An open, safe, person-centred space to talk — change through understanding. | A structured, assessment-based professional intervention, working to the Scientist-Practitioner Model. |
| Depth of assessment | Focused on where you are now and your goals, understanding the mechanisms and resistance behind behaviour. | In no rush to define or label — the focus is understanding your experience and what it means. | Scientific assessment and treatment, targeting the right issues within a clinical frame. |

And these are the rights you hold when you receive our services —
FromCode of Psychological Service Practice
It's the public document that governs every psychological service at TreeholeHK — setting out, in writing, your rights and the commitments we make to you. Every practitioner you meet is bound by it.
Meet our clinical psychologists
What shapes the outcome of treatment is the kind of person sitting across from you.
Drawing on the research, TreeholeHK distilled three criteria — and we hold every clinical psychologist we work with to all of them.
You can count on our clinical psychologists to be genuine, deeply knowledgeable, and skilful in just the right measure.
What sets TreeholeHK clinical psychology apart
Clinical doesn't mean cold — we hold structure and understanding in equal measure.
- Assessment is a tool for understanding you, not a label that defines you
- Grounded in evidence
- Your own understanding of your experience stays at the centre of the work
Genuineness
Your clinical psychologist meets you as their real self, honest about what they do and don't know — because we believe only a genuine person can kindle the courage to live genuinely and grow beyond who you've been.

Depth of knowledge
We expect our clinical psychologists to understand psychology and clinical theory deeply, and to bring it together fluently — shaping the direction of treatment around your concerns and needs. That's how you come to understand yourself more deeply and make real change.

The right measure of skill
Comfort and mutual trust are what let treatment begin at all. So a clinical psychologist needs real skill in guiding the work — helping you speak openly in a safe, honest space.

Two reasons to choose clinical psychology
Your difficulties are affecting life
The emotions or symptoms you're experiencing have started to affect daily life — work, relationships, your basic state. At this point it's not just about understanding, but about professional assessment and intervention to steady and improve things, step by step.
You want a more systematic way to address it
You want more than just talking — a structured approach that understands the problem and works through it step by step: clarifying what's happening, understanding the causes, and setting a clear direction for improvement.

Every practitioner you sit down with has passed our published selection criteria — all three dimensions met, or no invitation to join. Most applicants don't make it.
These criteria come straight from our Code of Psychological Service Practice: you have every right to know how the person across from you was chosen.
What happens after you book?

Pick a time
Choose a slot that works for you — in person or online over Zoom.
Pre-session questionnaire
On your first booking we'll ask you to fill in a short questionnaire: how you're doing, what you'd like to work on, and a few safety questions. It helps your clinical psychologist understand you before you meet.
Start your sessions
Sessions are 50 minutes. In the first, your clinical psychologist works with you to understand your situation and clarify the direction of treatment — not to decide it for you.
FAQ
Changing or cancelling a booking
Every booking must be confirmed at least 48 hours before the session; new bookings and changes aren't accepted inside 48 hours. You can review or change your booking here — for anything else, email [email protected] or call 9417 9844 during office hours.
If you don't give notice at least 48 hours ahead, or miss the session without any notice, the full session fee still applies.
If you arrive late, the session runs for the time that's left, with no extension; arriving more than thirty minutes late is treated as forfeiting the session, and the fee isn't refunded.
Should I choose psychotherapy or clinical psychology?
If your difficulties are clearly affecting daily life, or you're experiencing symptoms consistent with a clinical diagnosis, clinical psychology is the better choice. If you're largely managing life and want a safe space to understand yourself and make sense of your experiences, psychotherapy will suit you better. You can also book either one first and assess it together with our practitioner.
What's the difference between a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist?
A clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist are two different professions. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose mental illness and prescribe medication; a clinical psychologist focuses on psychological assessment and evidence-based talking therapies (such as CBT) and does not prescribe. The two often refer to and work alongside each other. TreeholeHK provides clinical psychologist assessment and treatment.
Do you offer sessions in English?
Yes. Our clinical psychologists work in Cantonese, Mandarin and English — just note your language preference in the remarks when you book.
Who can see the information I give when I book?
Only your clinical psychologist and the staff needed to handle your booking — all bound by the confidentiality commitments in the Code of Psychological Service Practice. You can ask to see or update your information at any time.
Can sessions be held online (video)?
Yes. Clinical psychology sessions can be in person or online (video) over Zoom. Just choose a Zoom slot when you book, and your clinical psychologist will send a Zoom link before the session.
Is what I tell my clinical psychologist confidential?
Everything you share stays strictly confidential, with only these exceptions required by law: a court order requiring disclosure, clear signs that you may harm yourself, or clear signs that you may endanger the life of someone else. Even then, we'll talk it through with you before any disclosure wherever we can. This is a commitment set out in writing in the Code of Psychological Service Practice.
How much does it cost?
Clinical psychology is 50 minutes per session at $1,980. Sessions are held at Chinachem Johnston Plaza, 4/F, 178 Johnston Road, Wan Chai, or online via Zoom; the default language is Cantonese.
What happens in the first session?
On your first booking we'll ask you to fill in a short questionnaire — how you're doing, what you'd like to work on, and a few safety questions — to help your clinical psychologist understand you before you meet. In the first 50-minute session, your clinical psychologist assesses your situation and clarifies the direction of treatment together with you; you don't need to decide first whether you're 'serious enough'.
