Death as a mirror: awakening experiences
The therapist doesn't steer away from death. An illness, a bereavement, a milestone birthday: these boundary situations make the limit of life suddenly visible. Yalom calls them awakening experiences and holds that they can reorder our priorities and sharpen our sense of the present. He also describes "rippling": the influence we have on others keeps spreading after we are gone, which can make it easier to accept that we will go.[4,9]
