Your diary card shows Friday night under "angry messages", with the urge at 5 out of 5. It's the main thing to look at this week. Shall we take that evening apart step by step?
- Client
OK… honestly, I don't want to keep doing this.
- Therapist
First, let's be exact. What did you do that night?
- Client
Around 1am I sent Ming a dozen messages. The last said, "Maybe we should break up."
- Therapist
Earlier that day, was anything making you more easily set off than usual? Sleep, food, other stress?
- Client
I'd slept four hours the night before, skipped dinner, and had words with my boss before leaving work.
- Therapist
So you were already running hot. What set it off?
- Client
He'd promised to call at eleven, and all I got was "Really tired tonight, let's talk tomorrow."
- Therapist
When you read that, what went through your mind?
- Client
"He doesn't care about me." Then panic, like he was about to leave me.
- Therapist
How strong was the panic? What did you notice in your body?
- Client
About 90. Tight chest, shaking hands, desperate for him to reply right away.
- Therapist
And then?
- Client
I sent one asking why he hadn't called. No reply, so I sent more and more, and they got nastier.
- Therapist
Wanting to know he still cares makes complete sense, and in that panic, wanting an answer right now does too. What we're looking for is another way to look after that need that doesn't hurt you both. What happened after?
- Client
He finally called and shouted at me. Weirdly, I felt relieved: at least he'd responded. But the next day he was cold all day, and I felt terrible about myself.
- Therapist
That matters: in the short term the messages did get a response, so next time the urge comes they're likely to come back. In the long run they bring what you fear closer. Looking at the whole chain, where could you most likely do something different?
- Client
…Before the second message, I think. The first one's fine; after that I can't stop.
- Therapist
Which skill could go there?
- Client
We learned STOP in group: phone down, step back… And I should at least eat dinner. I'm not sure I'll manage STOP in the moment, but I'll try.
- Therapist
Not being sure is normal. Shall we rehearse it now, with that night as the scene?
