To our supporters, friends in business and fellow Hongkongers:
TreeholeHK began as a start-up devoted to promoting mindfulness and psychology. I hereby announce that, from today, we are turning the full weight of our company's influence, for the time being, towards supporting the people of Hong Kong through this hard struggle against the proposed extradition bill. The reasons need little elaboration: the cold-bloodedness and indifference of the Hong Kong government no longer need another document to spell them out. The standing of the business community in Hong Kong could hardly matter more; should that community summon the strength to protect Hongkongers, the pressure on the government would be raised to another level entirely. TreeholeHK is, of course, a small and insignificant company, but we believe in the power of one telling ten, and ten telling a hundred. Beyond leading by example through the actions below, I will do everything I can to persuade our peers in business to join us:
Our company is currently studying the feasibility of the following concrete actions:
1) From today, TreeholeHK accepts US dollars as a method of payment and refuses to accept cheques drawn on Chinese-funded banks (applicable to public events and corporate services)
* Should any client wish to pay in US dollars, please notify our staff. For now we accept only US dollars in cash, and we will study other methods of payment as soon as possible. 15% of any sum received in US dollars will go towards supporting the resistance.
* We do not accept cheques drawn on Chinese-funded banks as a method of payment. We strongly recommend switching to a Hong Kong / foreign-funded bank; where that is not feasible, please pay in cash.
* Given the rapid deterioration of Hong Kong's political environment, and the fact that the Hong Kong government is now essentially controlled by China, I believe the standing of the Hong Kong dollar may be in real peril. Converting Hong Kong dollars into US dollars is not only a sensible way to protect oneself; it also sends the government a clear message that what they are doing is damaging the interests of Hong Kong.
2) All our events will incorporate civic-education content
* Our team will continue to apply our psychological expertise, walking every participant through the flaws in the proposed amendment and how law-enforcement officers can become callous, cold-blooded perpetrators.
* We hope mindfulness can play its part, at a psychological level, in the Mental Strength of the people of Hong Kong — so that they may stand firmer in a society battered by storms, and so that mindfulness, in turn, may do its part for Hong Kong.
